Wimbledon Embraces Video Replay Technology in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Australian Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review systems are set to arrive at Wimbledon this year.

Players are granted the option to challenge particular calls made by the chair umpire, echoing the practice already in place at both the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a year after the All England Club implemented ELC, which effectively ended the 147-year role of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a shot made contact with an rival's racket or person on the way past.
  • Potential interference end of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no cap on the amount of challenges a player can request.

A Recent Example

An illustrative example took place in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

Draper conceded it was a tough situation for the official, but thought his opponent had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and ruled Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Broader Adoption

This technology are not new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Other Changes

A further innovation at The Championships this year will be the addition of visual indicators on displays to complement the audio calls from the ELC system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have sometimes been uncertain whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
