Federal authorities has officially joined a legal challenge brought forward by California Republicans, aiming to halt the state's newly approved electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in a US district court, targets the map championed by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in response to a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's electoral map represents a blatant attempt to seize control that tramples on voting rights and undermines the electoral system," declared the nation's top law enforcement official.
The Democratic party have expressed confidence that the redistricting plan will withstand court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and they are likely to also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Constitutional Challenge
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used race as a factor to heavily favor Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"Race cannot be used as a proxy to advance political interests, but that is precisely what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Broader Implications
The legal battle represents the major response by Democrats in the continuing political battle that began in Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where Republican state legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it received with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
National Implications
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the controlling share will shape the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a unified Republican Congress will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
